UWRI – Hydrology Using HEC-HMS

You will be eligible to receive 1.5 CEU’s or 15 PDH’s for this course.
This course is also eligible for 12 CECs towards ASFPM CFM Certification.
What you will learn?
In this packed two-day class, you will learn everything you need to know about the basics and how to use the HEC HMS software, a powerful freeware developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. These will include, among other topics the advantages and limitations of this model, development of design storms, HEC HMS runoff methodology, use of thee Soils Conservation Service Method, basics of unit hydrographs, kinematic wave runoff modelling, various methods of conveyance routing, etc. This class will add more time to learn the computer model, and increase hands on experience with the HMS model based on comments from the last course.

2. How to Build a Basic HEC HMS model
a. Students will build a Basic Runoff Model from Scratch

c. Build Basic HMS model
4. Components of a Hydrologic Model
a. Soils Conservation Service Method
o Volumetric Losses from the Curve Number Method
o Initial Abstractions
o Rainfall Distributions
o SCS UH Procedure
b. Modeling Direct Runoff with HMS
o Basic Concepts of the Unit Hydrograph
o User specific Unit Hydrograph
o Snyder Unit Hydrograph
o Clark’s Unit Hydrograph
o Kinematic Wave Model
5. Workshop: Build and Develop a complete HMS model using
the SCS Procedure (Till end of class day)
6. Channel Hydraulic Modeling within HMS

7. Workshop: Develop a complete rainfall runoff model with
Snyder Unit Hydrograph, Pond, and Channel Routing.
8. HMS Calibration Procedures: Run optimization model
within HMS from workshop model and calibrate to a gage.

Faculty:
Gerald Blackler, PE, PhD has focused his academic and professional career in hydrology and water resources engineering. He has used advanced methods in HEC-HMS models for a variety of projects across the US that range from large burn areas in New Mexico to drainage from coal mines in West Virginia. He has worked on hydrologic and hydraulic projects across the US for the National Park Service, National Forest Service, the Federal Highway Administration, and many other public and private clients.
David Williams, PE, PhD, CFM, CPESC, PH has over 46 years of experience working in water resources and is an expert user and instructor for many US Army Corps of Engineers software packages including HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS. David is a lead instructor for a wide range of course for American Society of Civil Engineers and instructs beginning and advanced HEC-HMS courses, geomorphology of streams, advanced courses in hydraulic modeling with HEC-RAS and many other courses around the United States. He is a professional hydrologist (PH), and is on the executive board of the American Institute of Hydrology.
